I got to tour the Sunshine Skyway
Bridge in Tampa, Florida, when I worked for Florida DOT (along with many
of my co-worker friends). Here we are waiting for the tour to start.
The guides split us into two
groups - one to take the 2-person elevator up to the tower first;
the other to walk under the travel lanes first.
While we waited for the elevator,
the guide took our photos under the cables that support the bridge.
The ride up in the two person
elevator was a bit scary (especially when the operator accidentally shut
the power off when we were half way up), but the view was spectacular!
We could hear cars
above our heads. The big yellow thing in the ceiling is the shock
absorbing end of one of the cable supports. The guide gave us wax
pencils so we could personalize the bridge. :-)
If you ever get up there, read
my graffiti. :-) FDOT was a great place to work.
