12 Ways to Live an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle

12 Ways to Live an Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Expand options

In recent years, we have seen the importance of sustainable living and the ways to live an eco-friendly lifestyle. It has different names—zero waste, natural living, low-impact lifestyle or plastic-free, and so on.

If you have been meaning to join this movement but don’t know where to start, here are some quick and easy ways to get started.

1. Say no to samples

It can be tempting to get that free stuff they hand out at the mall, but you have to ask yourself, do you really need it? Sure, it’s free but it’s only additional waste that you have to dispose of later.

2. Shop with reusable bags

This is a great way to reduce the use of those plastic bags at stores. Make it a habit to always bring a reusable bag when you shop.

3. Turn off the faucet when not in use

We’re often too lazy to turn off the faucet or shower in between use. It only takes a few seconds so what’s the rush? Only turn on the faucet when you need to wash your hands or rinse utensils.

4. Bring a stainless steel water bottle

Rather than having to buy a plastic bottle every time you’re thirsty, use a quality stainless steel bottle instead. It can hold your coffee, tea, soups, broths, milk, and much more.

5. Use natural cleaners

Did you know that chemical cleaners often contain highly toxic compounds that are harmful to your health and the environment? All you need are a few key ingredients to make different cleaning solutions: baking soda, vinegar, borax, lemons, dish soap, and essential oils.

6. Use old bottle containers

They make great storage alternatives for dry goods and sauces. You never have to buy another food container when you have an abundant amount of old jars.

7. Compost

Any unused fruits, vegetables and scraps can be used as compost. You can use it as a natural fertilizer for your garden. You can give it to your community garden or drop it off at the nearest compost bin in your area.

8. Opt for paperless

A great way to get rid of the paper towel from your home is by using cloth towels. And when it comes to paper mail, sort them to only the most essential and have the rest be sent to you digitally.

9. Choose well

This means choosing brands and products that support sustainable living. For example, when shopping for bedding, you want a mattress that sources ethical materials. Support businesses that are ethical.

10. Run the dishwasher or washing machine when there’s a full load

The only way to truly ensure we’re living sustainably, we should consciously make an effort to conserve how we use water. If you absolutely need to use something, wash it by hand.

11. Read magazines and publications online

The Internet has become a vast news source and most outlets have become completely online. There are other news outlets that you’ll find that need a subscription, but the fees are low and equate to how much you might spend for a paper edition.

12. Use alternative transportation options

While you could easily jump in your car, you can also easily find a train or bus schedule that schedules where you’re going. Walking is an economical option, but also a healthy option if you have the time.

These lifestyle choices are easy to practice if you take it one step at a time. You’ll be playing your part in making our planet a more sustainable one.
