We could all use ways to make more mental space for calm and relaxation. Mindfulness is all about being present and aware of the sensations around you and taking everything in with intention. 

This practice can help you feel more connected to your surroundings. Not all mindfulness has to be meditation, either. In fact, you can find meditative qualities in any number of daily activities. All you have to do is look for them and embrace them.

1. Do a full body scan

A full body scan is the act of intentionally checking in on every feeling, system and part of the body to notice any changes or stresses. By doing this, you can take stock of all the places you might need to give a bit of extra compassion. You can even relax each muscle one by one, which can help to relieve stress and help you feel calm.

2. Drink a Hot Beverage

Often, coffee and tea in the morning is a rushed process meant to pack in the caffeine. You can turn your tea or coffee into a mental break and chance to tune into your surroundings. Notice all the sensations of brewing your coffee or tea — the smells, the sounds and the eventual taste of your beverage. Sit and enjoy it without distractions.

Jotting down even a few sentences every day can help you become more aware of your daily life. Writing is also a great way to process emotions. It can help you slow down and tune into your ideas and adopt a more centered approach.

4. Practice gratitude

Having a gratitude practice not only helps you be more mindful of your life and surroundings, but can help uplift your attitude. You can practice gratitude in many ways—making lists, reminding yourself of little things you’re happy about or even combining your gratitude practice with journaling.

5. Do a yoga practice

Doing yoga is all about slowing down and tuning in to all the sensations of your body and breath. Try going through a flow and paying extra attention to how your body feels—it may help you relax and center.

6. Try a walking meditation
