The Ultimate Moving Checklist

The Ultimate Moving Checklist Expand options

Finally, you found a place you love and you’re moving! This is an exciting time as it opens up a new chapter for you and your loved ones. However, before the memories start at your new home, you’ll have to go through the burden of actually moving there. There’s research stating that moving could be one of the most stressful experiences of our lives.

Luckily, being organized and having the ultimate moving checklist at hand can reduce some of that anxiety.

+Sort all your things

When you move, most likely, you’re not planning on taking everything with you. Before it gets close to the date you have to leave, take the time to sort your things.

Make piles of items that are going with you, what’s for sale, and the things you need to throw out. This is the time to go through your closet, your junk drawers, and your garage. Remember the golden rule. If you haven’t used it in the last 12 months, you don’t need it.

Doing this in advance will make moving day much more manageable.

+Host a yard sale

Give yourself at least two weekends to host a yard sale. This is a great way to get rid of things, recycle them and make a little money.

+Buy packing supplies

Get equipped with boxes in various sizes, packing tape, and of course, our favorite—bubble wrap.

Make sure you have a marker around too. You can label the boxes of exactly what’s inside and the room it belongs in, so when you’re unpacking in your new home, it’s not a mystery.

+Communicate with children’s schools

When you have school-aged children, you need to contact their teachers and principal to let them know about the move, and that your child won’t be coming back the following year. Ask the school for your child’s educational records.

These are essential for the new school district to know what your little one has learned in their previous classrooms. Then, you need to call to understand the enrollment process.

Ask the new district if your student can go on a tour of the school before the year starts, as this can be a stressful time for them.

+Figure out plans for your pets

Your furry friends should be comfortable during transportation and be taken care of. Make sure you have a crate that’s big enough for them to stretch and walk around. You might think letting your pet have free range of the vehicle is better for them, but Furry Friends Gear explains how animal carriers are a smarter choice for safety.

+Change your mailing address

You forget how many things are linked to your address—your bills, your driver’s license, your mail, and more. Put together a list of all the places you’ll need to contact to update your address.

This will save stress in the future when you’re at the new home. You won’t miss any payments or important mail because you didn’t change your information.

+Donate extra items

When you’re getting close to your moving date and can’t seem to get rid of some things, consider donating them. This can be clothing, furniture, decorations, plates, small appliances, or food.

+Disassemble furniture

When there are only days left, start prepping everything to go into the moving trucks. You’ll have a lot more space when everything is disassembled. Start with the furniture you can temporarily live without.

Save things like your bed or the dining room table for the day of the move. Make sure you have bags with labels and packaging for your furniture. You don’t want to get to your new home without a screw or an unexpected scratch on your favorite dresser.

+Hire movers or get helping hands

Weeks before you plan to move, you should arrange how everything is going to happen. This includes having enough help to get everything out of your old home, into the trucks, and into your new house.

Ask a group of friends in advance if they’re available to help you move. If you don’t have enough friends free on your moving day, you might have to hire professional movers. This will cost more, but you’ll be happy you didn’t have to move thousands of pounds of furniture by yourself.

Conclusion

Moving is both exciting and stressful. There’s so much that goes into it and a lot of things that can be forgotten.

Use our checklist to get everything in line before it’s moving day. The more you plan and prepare, the easier it will be for you and your family.
