Seems Insane! You Can Buy A Town In South Dakota For Less Than An Apartment In NYC

Just when you thought you had fully wrapped your head around the insane prices of New York City real estate, a thing like this happens. The town of Swett, South Dakota is on the market for just under $400,000.

That’s right, you can own an entire town in South Dakota for less than a quarter of the asking price for a 1,200 sq ft unit in Chelsea’s Modern 19. (The building’s cheapest apartment is $1.725 million.)

To be fair, Swett isn’t nearly as glamorous as the luxury building in Chelsea, but the property does have its charm. The listing notes that Swett is a popular location for pheasant hunting, and the purchase includes 6.16 acres of land, the Swett Tavern (pictured above), a three bedroom, one bathroom house, three trailer houses, a large garage, and even a working 1990 Volvo Semi truck.

If you’ve ever dreamed of leaving New York City for a simpler life tending bar and shooting pheasants, maybe Swett is the place for you. (Heck, you could even rename the tavern The Swett Lodge.) The rest of us, though, will just soldier on in our tiny NYC apartments, carving out enough room to live with a little help from MakeSpace.
